An AI certification costs anywhere from nothing to about $800 for a single exam attempt. The business-focused credentials in this guide cost between $49 and $100. The sticker price is only part of the bill. Retake fees, monthly subscriptions and renewal fees often decide what you pay in the end.

Every price below is as listed by the issuer in October 2026, in US dollars unless stated. Prices change, so confirm on the issuer page before you pay.

Exam-based certifications

These charge a fee for one proctored exam attempt. The fee buys the exam, not the training.

  • Generative AI Leader (Google Cloud): $99 plus tax; 50 to 60 questions in 90 minutes; no prerequisites; valid for three years (Google Cloud).
  • AWS Certified AI Practitioner (AWS): $100; 65 questions in 90 minutes; valid for three years (AWS).
  • AI Business Professional, AB-730 (Microsoft): a 45-minute proctored exam. Microsoft does not publish one global price. It sets the fee by the country where you sit the exam, and shows it when you schedule (Microsoft).
  • Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional, AIGP (IAPP): $649 for IAPP members and $799 for non-members (IAPP store).

Subscription courses with a certificate

These charge by the month. The faster you finish, the less you pay.

  • Google AI Essentials (Google, on Coursera): $49 a month after a seven-day free trial in the US and Canada; five courses; graded assessments (Coursera).
  • Google AI Professional Certificate (Google, on Coursera): $49 a month in the US and Canada; eight courses; graded assessments and an applied project (Coursera).
  • Coursera Plus (Coursera): $59 a month or $399 a year, covering most Coursera courses and professional certificates, including the Google AI Professional Certificate (Coursera).

Coursera notes that financial aid is available for both Google programs. Prices outside the US and Canada may differ.

Free options

  • Microsoft Learn (Microsoft): training is free. Module badges and trophies record completion. Certification exams are charged separately (Microsoft Learn).
  • Claude Academy (Anthropic): free courses, including AI Fluency: Framework and Foundations, about four hours with one quiz (Anthropic).
  • Elements of AI (University of Helsinki and MinnaLearn): the Introduction to AI certificate is free. The Building AI course is free, but its shareable certificate costs 50 euros (Elements of AI).

Free certificates prove you completed a course. Few include a proctored exam. For a fuller list, see free AI certifications.

What each kind of fee buys

An exam fee and a course fee buy different things. Compare like with like.

  • An exam fee buys a test under controlled conditions and a record the issuer will confirm. It does not include teaching.
  • A course subscription buys teaching, practice and usually a completion certificate. The certificate shows you finished, which is weaker evidence than a passed exam.
  • A free course buys the same teaching at no cost. You give up the formal record, or pay a small fee for it.

You can combine the two. Learn on a free or low-cost course, then pay for one exam once you are ready. That order delays the exam fee until a pass is likely.

The costs that are easy to miss

Three costs catch people out: retakes, subscriptions that keep running, and fees to keep the credential active.

  • AWS retakes: you pay the full registration fee for every attempt, and you wait 14 days after a failed attempt (AWS).
  • Microsoft retakes: you pay again for each attempt. You wait 24 hours after the first failure and 14 days after later ones, with at most five attempts in 12 months (Microsoft).
  • Google Cloud retakes: payment is required every time you register. Foundational exams allow up to ten attempts a year, with 14 days between failed attempts (Google Cloud).
  • IAPP retakes: an AIGP retake costs $475 for members and $625 for non-members. You must sit the exam within one year of purchase, or you lose the fee (IAPP).

Renewal costs vary as much as exam fees. Microsoft renews associate and expert certifications every year for free through an online assessment, and its fundamentals certifications do not expire (Microsoft). The IAPP runs the AIGP on a two-year term. Non-members pay a $250 maintenance fee each term and must log 20 continuing education credits (IAPP).

Practice can cost money too. Microsoft no longer offers its free Learn sandboxes. Some training exercises now need your own Azure subscription, or a free 30-day trial (Microsoft Learn).

A worked example

Suppose you take Google AI Essentials on a monthly Coursera plan, then sit the Google Cloud Generative AI Leader exam. Here is how the bill adds up at October 2026 US prices.

  • Google AI Essentials: one month at $49 if you finish inside the first paid month. The seven-day trial may cover it if you finish fast.
  • Generative AI Leader exam: $99 plus tax for the first attempt.
  • One retake, if needed: another $99 plus tax, after a 14-day wait.
  • Renewal: none for three years, when the credential expires.

The total runs from about $99 to $247 before tax. The same exercise for the AIGP, as a non-member with one retake, comes to $1,424 before any training.

How to decide what to spend

  1. Ask your employer whether its training budget covers exam fees.
  2. Start with a free course or a free skills check to see where you stand.
  3. Pay for an exam only when you can pass the issuer's practice questions.
  4. Choose a credential with a public verification link. A paid credential no one can check is a poor use of money.

Where Emeri fits

Emeri sells an AI proficiency certification, so weigh this comparison with that in mind. The free 15-minute check costs nothing. The Emeri certification costs $129 at its introductory price in October 2026. That price includes one 60-minute sitting and one retake if the first sitting falls below the bar. Results are reported as a band from E1 to E4 (bands).
