Emeri band · where you stand
E2 · Proficient
Works with AI reliably across everyday tasks — asks well, catches obvious errors, and produces work that stands on its own. The proficient professional standard.
E2 is the proficient professional standard. Someone at E2 uses AI across ordinary work and gets dependable results. They ask clearly, they read the output before they use it, and what they hand over does not need a second person to fix it.
E2 does not mean advanced use. It means the habits are in place. Most of the difference between E2 and E3 is range and judgment on harder, less clear tasks.

E2 in each of the six skills
- Asking well
- Requests state the audience, the goal, the format, and the length. Several options are requested where that helps. A missed draft leads to a better request, not a fresh vague one.
- Checking the work
- Output is read critically before use. Factual claims, figures, and names are checked against a source. Errors that look plausible are caught more often than not.
- Putting it together
- Multi-step work is split into stages, with AI used where it helps in each stage. Useful requests are saved and reused for recurring tasks.
- Getting real work done
- Work is taken from draft to a finished form a colleague can use without rework. The final version is shaped for where it is going, not left in the shape the model produced.
- Giving good context
- Relevant source material, examples, and constraints are supplied with the request. When the output is generic, the first question is what background was missing.
- Keeping it safe
- Private and confidential information is kept out of tools that are not approved for it. Sensitive details are removed or replaced before a document goes in.
How E2 differs from the bands either side
E2 and E1 · Foundational
E2 checks the work and E1 often does not. An E2 request also carries the audience, the goal, and the limits. The result is work that stands on its own instead of work that needs a reviewer.
E2 and E3 · Distinguished
E3 adds range and judgment. Where E2 is reliable on everyday tasks with a clear shape, E3 handles ambiguous tasks, combines several tools into one workflow, and decides which checks matter most for the stakes.
E2 in your role
The six skills are the same in every job. What E2 looks like is not. Each role guide describes every band from E1 to E4 with tasks from that job.
Questions
Is E2 a good result?
E2 is the proficient professional standard. It describes someone whose AI work is reliable across everyday tasks. That is the level most roles need for routine use.
What separates E2 from E3?
Judgment on harder work. E3 handles tasks without a clear shape, builds repeatable workflows across tools, and verifies in proportion to the stakes.
Is an E2 from the free check the same as a certified E2?
No. The free check gives an estimated band from multiple-choice questions. A certified band comes from the paid exam, which adds open-ended scenarios graded against published rubrics.
